The Math Behind Lean Mass

A raw score on the scale like 80 kg doesn't tell you the full story. You need to know the breakdown: what is fat, and what is lean tissue? If you already have your body fat percentage from a DEXA scan or calipers, the math is straightforward. Just subtract the fat from your weight. The formula is: **LBM = Weight × (1 − BF% ÷ 100)**. If you don't know your body fat, we estimate it. The Boer formula (1984) is the default because it's the most accurate height-weight estimate for adults. The James (1976) and Hume (1966) formulas are offered as alternatives, but they have blind spots—James notoriously underestimates lean mass if you're carrying extra weight. We run all the numbers so you don't have to.

Direct: LBM = Weight × (1 − BF% ÷ 100)

Boer (male): LBM = 0.407W + 0.267H − 19.2
Boer (female): LBM = 0.252W + 0.473H − 48.3

James (male): LBM = 1.1W − 128(W/H)²
James (female): LBM = 1.07W − 148(W/H)²

Hume (male): LBM = 0.3281W + 0.3393H − 29.534
Hume (female): LBM = 0.2957W + 0.4181H − 43.293

W = weight in kg, H = height in cm
Example

Male, 80 kg, 178 cm using Boer: 0.407×80 + 0.267×178 − 19.2 = 60.9 kg lean mass. Fat mass: 80 − 60.9 = 19.1 kg (about 23.9% body fat). Daily protein target: 60.9 × 2.2 ≈ 134 g/day.
