How the Navy tape method works

The Navy method estimates body fat from circumference measurements. Men use waist, neck, and height. Women also use hip circumference.

It is convenient for home tracking, but tape placement and posture can change the result. Measure the same way each time.

Men: 86.010 x log10(waist - neck) - 70.041 x log10(height) + 36.76
Women: 163.205 x log10(waist + hip - neck) - 97.684 x log10(height) - 78.387

Frequently asked questions

Is the Navy body-fat calculator accurate?

It is useful for a quick estimate, but DEXA, calibrated skinfolds, and repeated measurements are better for precision.

Where should I measure my waist?

Use a relaxed tape around the abdomen at the navel level, then keep that same placement for future measurements.
